Team member discount of 20% on everything. If you love helping people, and you know cars, mechanics, how things work, then this job is an excellent way to help those with vehicular dilemmas. There is always good and bad in every workplace, thus it’s a matter of perspective and what you seek to contribute and benefit from your time there. Like many others before me, I did most of my training on my own time after hours initially for months then I was su. I had worked 3wks in another store without training prior to assignment in Poughkeepsie. The hardest part of this job was getting superiors to support me and get the necessary time for training required. While attempting to address this the Mgr actually doubted and questioned me rather than supporting me. When confronted there was no support from the Store Mgr while staff did what they pleased. Staff felt cheated by having to help train me while in performance of their own duties which often went neglected till the next day or longer. Co-workers spent more time arguing amongst themselves than accomplishing any directives or helping, this often spilled into customer service. In any case there never was a chance of success without the expected support of superiors who weren't there. I felt I was made a scapegoat or anyone willing to take the position since there had already been 3 others prior to myself according to staff whom obviously had undermining goals having been passed over. As always with a new position comes new acquaintances and rapport to establish weather existing staff are ineffective or efficient? I learned that if your from outside the organization your a "threat" to all on staff whom fail to meet expectations. Prior to this position in NY, I had spent 7yrs with Pep Boys Auto and 2yrs with Tire Kingdom in Florida. It was a waste of my 1st year's efforts.Īfter 1.5yrs of service, I was promoted to a Key-Holder, which gave me the responsibilities of opening/closing the store, the safe codes, counting drawers, delegating tasks, training new-hires, working with unreasonable customer dema. So at the end of the year, I'd literally worked harder than anyone, I'd learned a second language and was used for my translating ability every day to help my non-Spanish speaking managers and co-workers gain sales from non-English speakers. so they always threw me in the back of the store to put up to 9 pallets (thousands of pounds) of incoming "truck" away and many times by myself, alone. I was working mostly in the back at my hub-store in Eloise, Florida and they didn't tell me that if your SPH (sales per hour) for the year average drop below your quota, then that alone determines whether or not you're eligible for an end-year raise. Mid-year, I learned Spanish which I was told granted a $1 raise it never happened. My entry pay was $9ph, when I began and was told I'd have a 3-month review, to potentially get a pay raise but when the time came it never happened. I began working for Advance Auto, thinking that it'd be a good job for me since I have mechanic, management and leadership experience and I'm an extremely fast learner. This is one of the single biggest let-downs of a company I've ever had and I was an unpaid factory worker from 8-18yrs old. In all of my years of working with the public, I have to say that you really need to have your head examined if you're willing to put up. Management is willing to side with the customer because of how much they spend, and they'll throw you under the bus in a second to make the customer happy. Some commercial customers are tough, mean, and wish you dead because the part you sent them was wrong (even though they didn't give you the right make, model, and year of the car), but that's your problem, not theirs. Sometimes, the commercial pros have to do a little digging and research to find the right part, but it's generally pleasant. They buy the part, one of the drivers delivers the part. Commercial is a few shades easier to take then the retail side because the customers are shop owners, they know what they want, they even provide you with a part number in many instances. ![]() Having worked in both departments, I can tell you that it's like watching a train wreck over, and over, and over, and over, and over. One side does commercial work with drivers and commercial sales associates, and the other helps the general public who come in and want to do the work themselves. Advance stores are essentially two different stores. It makes the world go around and nothing else matters.Įvery store has a sales goal for the day. Essentially (at my store anyway), EVERYTHING is based on sales numbers. Advance is a tough place to be sometimes.
